Hi,

I assume that the paper that you are referring to is "Scalable Session 
Messages in SRM using Self-configuration". 

For the simulations presented in the paper, each packet carries original ttl 
that it was sent with. After comparing the remaing ttl value and the original 
ttl, one can figure out the ttl to the sender.
