NS simulator doubt

Dear I am a student of Electrical Eng. pursuing a Bachelor'ds Degree and
am presently required to simulate certain modifications that I've thought
of on the Hierarchical link sharing algorithms proposed by Prof Zhang aof
CMu and Dr. Sally Floyd and Dr. Jacobson of LBL labs, Berkeley. My problem
is that they have simulated their algorithms with TCP, Telnet, and FTP
packets. I guess they have used some sort of simulator to generate these
packets. Unless I too generate these packets, I will be unable to compare
my results with those mentioned above. I checked up on NS but the TCL
scipt left me a little confused. I can manage C++, and have also written
the simulatiomn code in C++. All I need is to somehow generate those
packets.  Could you please guide me on this.  I have read the first
chapter of ns simulator documentation and that has really confused (or
rather scared) me on whether I'll be able to generate the packets at all
or will I have to write the entire simulation code in TCL language?
