error model over lan

I am using version 2.1b3 of ns. I am trying to simulate transmission
errors over a LAN. Whereas I am successful in simulating errors
over a "simple-link" , I am not able to simulate errors over a LAN.
The error_ value in common header of the packet is always zero when
it is received by the Link Layer.
Can anyone help me with simulating errors over LAN ?
