NumberInterfaces_ : where in source ?

I'm trying to find exactly what
	Simulator set NumberInterfaces_ 1

does.  As I understand it, this numbers the interfaces at a node so that
multiple links into or out of a node can be used--but I need more
precise info in order to use this.  So far I haven't been able to find
the source code which implements/processes such a statement/command.

Where in the source tree should I look?  Or elsewhere ?
