[ns] Wireless Network

Dear Ns Users,
I am apparently new to NS.I am using ns version 2.1b6.I am using it to simulate a wireless network.My problem arises here.
when you create 2 mobile nodes and start to run a ftp/telnet application , what is the maximum distance between then which facilitates communication between the nodes?
I also have another question
what are the different applications (other than ftp and telnet) that can be used n a wireless environment?

Please take time off to reply as it would help this fledgling immensly and remove the stymie in project.
