The only published emulation research done using nse is 
Kevin Fall's paper  found at http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~kfall/

nse does support passing of IP traffic throug the emulator. 
There as some example scripts present in the ~ns/emulate directory. 

An emulation tool for Linux platforms is Dummynet.
