Which version of UNIX?  Is it really UNIX or a UNIX-like OS (Linux, 
*BSD, AIX, etc, etc)?

The line above says that you are trying to install ns 2.1b7a, but 
your subject line says ns 2.1b8a.  Which version is it that you are 
trying to install?

Seems like this was a problem on Solaris (??) boxes that came up a 
month ago.  Take a look at the ns-users mailing list archive
	http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/archive/ns-users/webarch/current/

The link is old.  ns is maintained on the isi.edu site.  Just 
truncate the mailing list archive URL a little to get there.
