can you find a network "sniffer" to capture some of the ethernet packets?
My first inclination would be to examine the advertised window size in the
TCP header.

The packet capture can be done with a unix machine running tcpdump, or a
commercial product like Etherpeek.

Commercial packages or Shawn Ostermann's "tcptrace" for unix will quickly
tell us what window size is actually being used.
