SISS: Sensor-Internet Sharing and Search
Project Summary
The goal of this research is to allow individual or clusters of sensors
to cooperate and share data over the Internet.
We see a future where, at two extremes,
large scientific sensornets are formed of
multiple wireless patches bridged by the Internet,
and where individual sensors are deployed by
casual users or ``citizen scientists'',
with their data posted to sensornet web logs or slogs.
A new network architecture and new approaches
are needed to blend sensornets and the Internet:
- protocols that allow trivial integration of new sensornets
into the Internet, exploiting the huge communications and computation
power in the Internet, yet not compromise the efficiencies that
enable today's wireless sensornets;
- new approaches must be found to manage sensor data disclosure,
evaluation, and analysis, to give users confidence
in their confidentiality and the quality of data from casual sensor streams;
- novel forms of sensor discovery and search are required that
leverage distributed filtering by users, sifting through
structured sensor data and metadata and making them easy to access.
We do not expect to build the one perfect sensor system,
because there is no one such system.
Instead, we are defining open protocols that enable
interoperation of many sensor streams,
each tailored to specific needs,
and that facilitate safe sharing and discovery
of these streams,
with instances of the components to demonstrate these capabilities.
We expect this work to lead to new network architectures
that support traditional Internet services as well as lightweight
and sometimes transient sensornet data sources.
