Topology in NS-2

I am trying to modify NS-2 and I need a notion of global topology. For
instance, I am trying to track how many packets are sent/dropped on
each link per source/destination pair. Does anyone have any advice
what would be the easiest way to do this? I have looked both in C++
and Tcl code and I can't figure out how to connect dropping event with
objects in between which link is;( And how does link have a knowledge
which nodes it connects?
