this is rather interesting. i ran into this before in 1.0a8 and i thought
i've fixed it. basically the problem was about open a file in text mode vs
binary mode and the \r\n stuff. didn't notice that it works only from
cygwin though, perhaps because i've completely ditched dos prompt...
if you fix it your patch is welcome. if i got around to fix it i'll let
your know (not in the near future...)
