We've considered splitting the list several times, but there are two
problems:
1. There's no easy way to split.
(novices vs. experts, compile vs. other, bugs vs. extensions...
none of them has clearly distinct topics)
2. Even if we split, I'm concerned that people would not make use of
the split (but would instead post to both lists, or post to the wrong
one, ...). We already have a lot of trouble with people posting FAQs
to the list, even though we strongly encourage people to read the FAQ
(on the web page, and in e-mail, and...).
Since a fair number of responses are already "see web page xxx" or
"see prior list discussion xxx", I'm hesitant to add the noise of
"this question should have gone to other list xxx".
