General Information about the Mailing Lists

• ns-users: for general ns and nam questions
• ns-announce: for announcements from ns developers only (very low volume; almost no one should ever post to this directly)
• ns-edu: for educational use of ns and nam (classroom demos, lab exercises, etc.)
• ns-developers: for developers to discuss ns and nam software development

Please note that ns-edu and ns-announce are moderated. Off-topic posts to ns-edu will be rejected. Basically all posts to ns-announce are rejected (unless you're a developer announcing a release or tutorial or major bugfix).

As of June 2004 the ns-users lists allow posts from subscriber only. If you're not a subscriber, your posts to the list will be rejected. (This is unfortunately necessary to dispose efficiently of spam; manual filtering is too expensive.) We realize that the list is high traffic, so if you wish to post to the list without receiving messages on it, please subscribe and select the no-mail option for your subscription.

Some FAQs about the Mailing lists

• How can I subscribe to the mailing lists?
There are two ways, either:
• Go to the mailing list's information page (see the links above) and follow the instructions in the "subscribing to..." section.
• Or send email to mailinglist-name[email protected] with subscribe in the body. Your mail message must be in plain text format, not MIME. (Replace mailinglist-name in the e-mail address with either ns-users, ns-announce, or ns-edu.)
• How can I unsubscribe to the mailing lists?
Again, there are two ways, either:
• Go to the mailing list's information page (see the links above), enter your e-mail address in the last box (next to "edit options"), click on "edit options", then follow the instructions in the "Unsubscribing from..." section of the web page.
• Or send email to [email protected] with unsubscribe password in the body. Your mail message must be in plain text format, not MIME.
In both cases, you need your list password that you entered when you first subscribed to the list.

• But, I forget my password...how should I unsubscribe from the list?
• You can always get your password from the lists' information page. Enter your email address in the box at the very bottom (next to "edit options"), click on "edit options", then click on the "email my password to me" button on the new web page
• Where can I find the archives of these mailing lists?
• They are linked on the list's information page
• You can also search nsnam's web site .
• Why I can't receive e-mail messages from the mailing lists?
• Sometimes, due to problems with networks or your email server, the lists administrators receive error messages about failed delivery to your address. If this happens persistently, the system or the administrators may disable the delivery to your address or even remove your address from the lists. 
• You are welcome to resubscribe the lists. But, please make sure your address is valid.
  
• Why I can't see my post to [email protected] list?
• [email protected] is a mailing list for discussions on ONLY educational use of ns and nam such as teaching and classroom demo. We don't want to overwhelm the list with general ns and nam questions. So, each post will be reviewed before appearing on the list. We apologize for the added delay.
• Please make sure that your post is ON-TOPIC before you send it out.
• For general ns or nam questions (not related to teaching/classroom use), please send them to the ns-users mailing list.
• Why I can't see my post to [email protected] list?

• No, really I'm subscribed to the list and getting all this mail, but it still won't let me post. What's going on?

You may be subscribed with one e-mail address but your e-mail may be labeled with a different address. For example, some people at USC may subscribe with the address [email protected] but thne post their mail from an account on the machine pollux where it seems to come from [email protected]. Our mailing list software can't figure this out. Sometimes a person will post from different addresses at different times (perhaps one from home and the other from work).

Work-around: either always post from the address you signed up for, or subscribe all of the addresses you use to the mailing list. Of course, if you subscribe with multiple addresses you won't want to get multiple copies of mail from the list. If you go to the list info pageyou can change your subscription option to no-mail on all but one account to avoid this problem.

• I'm embarrassed that I asked such a silly question, can you remove my post from the archive?
Unfortunately, handling manual updates to our archives is very labor intensive and so we do not handle archive remove requests unless there is a compelling reason (i.e., post of copyrighted or illegal material, severe personal hardship, etc.).
• I send an email to the list, but receive a message saying my post has been held for approval. What should I do?
Mailman, our mailing list program, catches suspicious e-mail messages (such as administrative messages and some spam). It will notify list administrators (us) when there are mails held for approval. We will check the message, and approve it for posting if it is a normal mail. Occasionally, we reject some inappropriate mails, for example, messages sent to [email protected] asking general ns and nam questions (which should go to ns-users).
• I send an email to the list administrator, but receive an auto response. Was my email received the administrators?
Yes, we receive every email sent to [email protected]. Please note that you should send emails to -admin only when you really need attention from the list administrators: about subscription problems, mailing list abuse, etc.; NOT general ns and nam questions, send those to the corresponding list; NOR general subscribe/unsubscribe requests, use the lists' information web page as listed below, it's much faster. Please also remember that in mailing ns-users-admin you're taking a human being's time; we will response to your requests as soon as possible, but cannot do so instantly.
• Problem: I can't subscribe or unsubscribe to the mailing list. I get error messages back like:

  >>>>> This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
  >**** Command 'this' not recognized.
  >>>>>
  >>>>> ------=_NextPart_000_0013_01C00841.7A1B9BA0
  >END OF COMMANDS
  

  Solution: Send simple text (ASCII) e-mail to the subscribe address, not MIME. Majordomo, the mailing list management program we use, can't handle MIME.

You can subscribe/unsubscribe list by sending mail to [email protected] with subscribe or unsubscribe password in the subject line.

Please DO NOT send subscribe or unsubscribe messages to [email protected] directly. That just goes to the everyone reading the list and annoys them.

Since ns-announce list is restricted for announcements from ns and nam developing group, please DO NOT post general ns and nam problem there. Your email will be rejected.

Since ns-edu list is restricted for discussions on educational use of ns and nam, please DO NOT post general ns and nam problem there. Instead, post them to the ns-users list described above. Off-topic posts to ns-edu will be returned to sender.
